FAQ: Are all patients included in the Uniform Data System ZIP Code counts?

Yes, but not all patients will be reflected in the UDS Mapper. For the small number of patients for whom residence is not known or for whom a proxy is not available, residence should be reported as “unknown.” Tourists and other persons that may have a permanent residence outside the country, are to be reported under “other” ZIP code. Although health centers are expected to report residence by ZIP code for all patients, some health centers may draw a significant number of patients from a large number of ZIP codes. To ease the burden of reporting, ZIP codes with ten or fewer patients may be aggregated and reported in the “other” category.



FAQ: Are labels added with drawing tools included in the printed or saved version of the map?

Yes, all shapes, drawings and labels added to the map will be visible in the Print Preview screen and in your final printout AND via the URL you generated if you clicked the Share button on the left side of the map.



FAQ: Are there any crosswalks between ZCTA and census tracts?

There are no true crosswalks between ZCTAs and census tracts. Both ZCTAs and census tracts are built up from block groups, but census tract boundaries do not align with ZCTA boundaries. This is demonstrable if you turn on both ZCTA and Census Tract boundaries in the Boundaries and Optional Layers tool.



FAQ: Are there any data for Puerto Rico in the UDS Mapper?

Yes. There is information about Puerto Rico within the Explore Service Area Tool, the Main Maps tool, and some datasets within the Community Health View tool. There is NO information for Puerto Rico within the Population Indicators tool.



FAQ: Are there any data for the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands in the UDS Mapper?

Yes. There is information about U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands within the Explore Service Area Tool and the Main Maps tool. There is NO information for the U.S. affiliated Pacific Islands within the Population Indicators or the Community Health View tools.



FAQ: Are there any data for the U.S. Virgin Islands in the UDS Mapper?

Yes. There is information about the U.S. Virgin Islands within the Explore Service Area Tool and the Main Maps tool. There is NO information for the U.S. Virgin Islands within the Population Indicators or the Community Health View tools.



FAQ: Can I add additional information or drawings to the map?

Yes. In the Tool Kit in the lower left side of the map, click the 'Drawing Tools’ icon (looks like a pencil) to add drawings, points, lines, shapes, and text. You can also use the Map My Data tool to add points to the map.



FAQ: Can I add addresses of patients to Map My Data if I don’t use the patient names?

No, this is still a violation of HIPAA.



FAQ: Can I download a data table for MAP for MAT data?

The Data Table tool in the UDS Mapper reports at the ZCTA level. As MAP for MAT Population Indicators data are at the county level, they are currently not available in the Data Table tool.



FAQ: Can I export shapefiles?

No. You can export data to link to existing shapefiles in your mapping system. For other layers such as MUAs and HPSAs, you can go directly to the source data on the HRSA Data Warehouse to get those shapefiles. Information about sources of data can be found in the Knowledge Base section of the UDS Mapper.



FAQ: Can I export the map on the screen as an image file?

While you cannot export the map as an image file, you can take a screenshot or use a clipping tool to capture any on-screen content you would like to save as an image. Then save your screenshot or clip as an image file.



FAQ: Can I export the map on the screen to a PDF file?

You cannot export the map to a PDF file unless you have print-to-PDF software on your computer. You can print your map by clicking the Printer icon in the Tool Kit in the lower left side of the map.



FAQ: Can I export the raw data of the map that I am viewing?

You can see much of the data you are viewing (by ZCTA) via the "Data Table" icon (looks like four squares); this is located on the bottom left Tool Kit. Please note that this icon will be inactive unless a) ZCTAs are selected and b) the tool showing the selected ZCTAs (Explore Service Area Tool) is the open tool on the upper right Tool Box. Once in the Data view, you can export the data by clicking the ‘Export’ icon at the top right of the screen.



FAQ: Can I generate a facility report for MAP for MAT Health Related Facilities?

Yes. In the Explore Health Related Facilities Tool, be sure you’ve chosen at least one ZCTA and the facilities you’d like to include, and click Generate Report. Your report will list all chosen facilities within your selected ZCTAs.



FAQ: Can I map more than one dataset at a time using Map My Data?

Yes. Users can upload and save up to 10 datasets and display them simultaneously.



FAQ: Can I see more traditional maps in this tool like street maps or satellite maps?

Yes. Click the "basemaps" icon on the lower left Tool Kit. These are background maps and you may need to turn off other layers, particularly Main Maps, to see that background. One way to to turn off the main map is to go to the Main Maps icon on the top right Tool Box, scroll to the top and select ‘No Main Maps Selected.'



FAQ: Can I see the data from a particular health center?

Sort of. You can see the patient origin area for individual Health Center Program (HCP) awardees and look-alikes at the organization level. When in ‘By Patient Origin’ mode in the Explore Service Area Tool, you can select individual Health Center Program awardees and look-alikes to see the ZCTAs they are actually serving, according to the patient ZIP Codes reported by the health center in the UDS. Also in the Explore Service Area Tool, you can also use the Health Center Information Card Deck to see data about health center organization patient characteristics, patient demographics, quality, staffing, services, and costs.



FAQ: Can more than one person from an organization sign up for an account?

Yes. The system is open to and free for everyone.



FAQ: Can penetration rates be calculated for special populations such as migrant and seasonal agricultural workers?

Currently Health Center Program (HCP) awardee and look-alike UDS data are reported in aggregate (all patients) by ZIP Code. There is no requirement or even a place within the UDS to separate out patients by type and then by ZIP Code. Furthermore, even if health centers reported their patient data in the UDS by patient type by ZIP Code, we would not be able to display penetration rates for special populations because we do not have area estimates for the total numbers of seasonal and migrant farm workers or other special populations by ZCTA.



FAQ: Can the data be exported as rasters?

No, but some layers such as Medically Underserved Areas/Populations and Health Professional Shortage Areas are available directly from our data source, the HRSA Data Warehouse, at https://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/.



FAQ: Can the data be exported as vectors?

No. For the health center data, you can export data to a .csv file to link to existing data and layers to use in your mapping system. For other layers such as MUAs and HPSAs, you can go directly to the source data on the HRSA Data Warehouse.



FAQ: Can the UDS Mapper distinguish between types of encounters (i.e., medical vs. dental vs. behavioral health)?

The UDS Mapper cannot distinguish between types of encounters. Currently Health Center Program (HCP) awardee and look-alike UDS data are reported in aggregate (all patients for all services) by ZIP Code. Unless and until health centers report their patient data in the UDS by service type by ZIP Code, we will not be able to display service areas for these different types of services. Information regarding services provided by the health center are available in the Explore Service Area Tool’s Information Card Deck in the “Services” Information Card.



FAQ: Can you differentiate the functionality between UDS Mapper and HealthLandscape?

UDS Mapper is built on the HealthLandscape platform and features some of the same tools, but is specifically targeted for analyzing service areas of the Health Center Program and estimates of unmet primary care need of low-income populations. The HealthLandscape mapping tool provides a wider scope of information, including, but not limited to, health, economics and community data. There are other mapping tools built by HealthLandscape with other targeted data and users.



FAQ: Can you export the map as an image file so I can use it in a PowerPoint presentation? Is it possible to insert maps into a Word document?

Aside from using the ‘Print’ tool within the UDS Mapper, you can create a screenshot to get an image file of the map.



FAQ: Can you isolate specific health centers and their other locations so they are the only ones that show up on the map?

It is not possible to filter which Health Center Program (HCP) awardee and look-alike locations or their service access points are displayed on the map. These and the other optional layers can only be turned on or off. However, you may use the Draw button to place points at any location you choose. Once the drawings are in the locations you desire, turn off the health center locations or other layers so only the drawings remain on the map. You may also use the Map My Data tool to add multiple address points at one time for a similar effect.



FAQ: Can you map by race and ethnicity?

In the Main Maps tool, you can select maps that show the percentage of the population who are Non-White, Hispanic, Black, Asian, or American Indian/Alaska Native by ZCTA. Unless and until health centers report their patient data in the UDS by service type by ZIP Code, we will not be able to display service areas for these specific services. While race/ ethnicity patient data cannot currently be mapped due to reporting methods, health center specific data can be viewed in the Explore Service Area tool Health Center Administrative Locations Information Card Deck.



FAQ: Can you please describe the different levels of access to the UDS Mapper?

At this time, there is solely a public level of access. All users have the same level of access to the UDS Mapper.



FAQ: Do we have to register for a new account to access UDS Mapper separate from HealthLandscape?

Maybe. In order to utilize the UDS Mapper, you must register for an account. If you already have a HealthLandscape account and are not able to log into the UDS Mapper, please use the “Contact Us” form to request access to the UDS Mapper, or create a new account with a different email address. If you register for the UDS Mapper first, you will automatically have access to HealthLandscape with the same account.



FAQ: Do you have any historical UDS data in the mapper?

The only UDS data we have from previous years are represented in our Main Maps tool in the “Percent Change” layers. Available for mapping and download are two-year and one-year change in several categories. We suggest if you think you might want historical data in the future to save the data you want each year. Keeping in mind your historical data will have limitations due to things such as changing ZCTA assignments or people moving.



FAQ: Do you have to work for a health center to use this tool?

No. The UDS Mapper is open to everyone.
